Hannah Bosch and Dr. John Alper to strengthen the „All-Iron Redox-Flow“ research at VoltStorage

Munich, 27th March 2020 – After successful market entry of the world’s first low cost residential battery storage on the basis of the ecological Vanadium Redox Flow technology, VoltStorage focuses on the future. This is why the VoltStorage research department was extended already in summer 2019 to push ahead innovations. VoltStorage is expanding today again with two new and experienced researchers in the field of chemistry in order to intensify the development on Iron based Redox Flow systems. With that, VoltStorage underlines its claim for technological leadership in the area of Redox Flow research.

VoltStorage expanding with researchers from renowned universities

Dr. John Alper earned his Ph.D. in the area of Chemistry of the UC at Berkeley, one of the most renowned universities in the world. During his doctorate work he researched on electrochemical energy storage and super capacitors. In the further course, John conducted research in the field of the Lithium Ion technology for over three years at the CEA, one of the largest research centers in France. Recently, he worked intensively on a NASA contract to develop Flow batteries. “We are very glad to win John for the team and got him to relocate from the US to Germany, because with his many years of experience in the battery and Redox Flow research, he will be very valuable in order to reach our development goals” says VoltStorage CTO Michael Peither who is responsible for the developments of the Redox Flow technology at VoltStorage.

Hannah Bosch graduated in Chemical Science from Scottish University of St. Andrews, the third oldest university in the United Kingdom after Oxford and Cambridge. Following that, she researched extensively on high temperature fuel cells at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Prior to joining VoltStorage, Hannah worked on the integration of Lithium Ion cells into battery modules in the automotive sector. “We received over 100 applications – amongst them battery experts from the US, China and Europe. Hannah convinced us from the beginning, since she can bring in important knowledge from the field of fuel cell technology into the development of Iron based Redox Flow batteries” explains Michael Peither.

All-Iron Redox-Flow batteries as long-term development goal

With a dedicated four-person research team, VoltStorage will be engaged much more in the development of All-Iron Redox Flow batteries. Last year, novel solutions in the area of fundamental research in Iron based Redox Flow batteries could already be developed and are currently filed for patents by VoltStorage. During the course of this and the following year, further development steps and prototyping will follow. “We see in All-Iron Redox Flow battery systems a significant lower cost alternative to Redox Flow batteries already in use that are not based on Iron but on Vanadium. We expect a clear price advantage in the application of larger scale battery storage solutions, which we are already working on – and not just compared to other Redox Flow Batteries, but also to suppliers of Lithium Ion based systems” according to VoltStorage CEO Jakob Bitner.
