VoltStorage Successfully Qualifies Industrial Waste for the Iron Salt Battery

On their mission to develop and provide environmentally sustainable storage solutions for renewable energies, VoltStorage is proud to announce a breakthrough achievement. One of the company's R&D teams, led by Dr. Nebojsa Zec, has successfully identified waste materials from industrial production as potential raw materials for the Iron Salt Battery, resulting in a significantly smaller environmental footprint compared to alternative battery solutions.

VoltStorage’s Iron Salt Battery, known for its potential to revolutionize green energy storage, uses iron, salt, and water to store energy in a sustainable redox flow system. The Iron Salt Battery enables the storage of renewable energy on a grid-scale at very low costs, facilitating round-the-clock use of renewable sources.

Now, the company has achieved a major step by successfully identifying potential sources of a key ingredient of the electrolyte formulation in recycled waste streams of industrial production.

By investigating and qualifying the use of recycled waste material and byproducts, VoltStorage's approach can be seen as a blueprint for circular economy strategies. This innovation makes it possible to develop an energy storage solution that not only provides sustainably sourced green energy, but also uses environmentally friendly materials at a very low carbon footprint.

Verena Graf, CTO of VoltStorage, explains: “We aim to develop a storage solution for renewable energies that not only makes green energy available but is also a green product itself. Thus, the battery should be as environmentally friendly as possible, have the lowest possible carbon footprint, and ideally use recycled components.”

Dr. John Alper, Head of R&D at VoltStorage, adds: “Embracing our vision for sustainable energy storage, we have found a way to leverage what others see as waste. This approach not only fosters greater sustainability and resource conservation within our industry but does so without compromising efficiency or performance. We’re proving that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with technological excellence.”

The team is currently working on consolidating these findings and setting new benchmarks that match or exceed those of virgin raw materials. With a patent evaluation underway, they are also exploring additional avenues to incorporate recycled materials into their Iron Salt Battery, with the goal of defining quality and performance standards for future production partners and suppliers. In this way, VoltStorage aims to ensure that their innovations lead to tangible improvements in the future of energy storage.
