Long Duration Energy Storage
The Iron Salt Battery is designed as a Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) application. The term generally refers to energy storage systems and storage technologies that discharge over a period ranging from eight to more than a hundred hours. This closes any supply gaps in times of low wind and sunshine and covers the base load.
In contrast, batteries, for example, which focus on providing high power in a very short period of time, often take less than an hour.
Long-Duration Storage From Renewable Energies
The forecast demand for batteries is enormous, and the available technologies are limited in their possibilities. Many of the solutions currently established on the market are not suitable for securing renewable energies on a daily and weekly basis. This is due to their specifications and come in part from countries with problematic environmental or human rights situations. In addition, solutions based on lithium, for example, would simply be too expensive.
Here, our LDES application is the right answer. Based on flow battery technology, VoltStorage develops the Iron Salt Battery, which offers a wide range of advantages, especially with regard to charging and discharging times in the range of 12 to 100 hours. It is thus regarded as a game changer for the energy transition to be achieved.
Member Of The Long Duration Energy Storage Council
VoltStorage is a member of the international Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council). The organization promotes the introduction of long-term storage and provides information, knowledge and assistance for the implementation of this technology. The LDES Council represents a wide range of different technologies and approaches to energy storage. It provides analysis, background information and facts about the current use of long-term storage as well as forecasts for their future introduction. In addition, the LDES Council offers recommendations for action and advice to governments, policy makers and other players in the energy industry.
Member Of Flow Batteries Europe
VoltStorage is a member of Flow Batteries Europe (FBE), an international non-profit organization that aims to help accelerate decarbonization in Europe and worldwide. This will be achieved primarily through the use of energy storage and flexibility solutions with flux battery technology. The association represents the interests of hydrogen battery companies with a unified voice in order to develop a long-term strategy for the sector.
