Munich, February 16, 2022 – VoltStorage is now a member of the Long Duration Energy Storage Council and looks forward to working with other entrepreneurs in the technology sector. The LDES Council focuses on long duration energy storage and provides comprehensive advice to governments worldwide on this topic.
About the LDES Council
The LDES Council is an association of technology pioneers, large-scale energy users and investors. The Council also includes LDES technology companies working on a broad range of technologies, including mechanical, thermal chemical, and electrochemical innovations.
The mission of the LDES Council is to provide baseload power from renewable energy using carbon-free long-term storage to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. The focus is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector with profitable, flexible and, above all, reliable solutions. For this reason, the LDES Council provides fact-based guidance and advice on the implementation of long-term energy storage for government and power grid operators. In addition, the LDES Council acts as a point of contact and consultant for industry representatives in the energy sector to promote the adoption of long-term energy storage to advance carbon neutrality.
Need for Long Duration Energy Storage
Supplying the power grid exclusively with renewable energies carries certain challenges along. These include the different load on the already existing grid infrastructure, regarding the generation, transmission, and distribution of energy. This is caused by the fluctuations in generation, mainly due to the dependence on weather conditions and time of day, which cannot be influenced. Energy storage systems compensate for these fluctuations by initially absorbing the generated energy and releasing it when needed with the continuity of voltage and power required by the power grid. To be able to cover the base load with energy storage systems, charging and discharging periods of up to eight hours are required, for which the widely used lithium-ion batteries, are less suitable. These are designed to deliver high amounts of energy in a short time, e.g. for operating an electric vehicle. Long duration storage batteries, such as those from VoltStorage, which are based on iron salt technology, are therefore needed to ensure base load coverage from renewable energies.
According to the Council, an infrastructure of long-term storage facilities will be needed that can store energy of 85 to 140 TWh by 2040. The LDES also points out, that an expansion to 1TWh by 2025 is sufficient to successfully turn electricity generation to the path of full C02 neutrality.
VoltStorage is pleased to be part of the LDES Council and to advance this important mission.
„Achieving 100% electricity generation 24/7 using only wind and solar power is a tremendous challenge. But it is a challenge that our generation must meet to stop global warming. Not within the next decade or the next year, but today. Energy storage, especially long-term storage, is an essential part for the success of the energy transition,“ says Jakob Bitner, CEO of VoltStorage.

For solar and wind power operators bridging supply gaps during periods of low wind and sunlight and thus securing the provision of the base load will become increasingly important in the coming years. However, in order to ensure a continuous base load supply even when there is no wind or little sunlight, appropriate storage systems for so-called Long Duration Energy Storage play a central role.
