VoltStorage awarded as Energy Start-up Bavaria 2020

VoltStorage convinces in the competition „Energy Start-up Bavaria“ with innovative and pioneering ideas for the energy future of Bavaria.

The „Energy Start-up Bavaria“ competition is a joint initiative of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Bayern Innovativ GmbH with the Center for Digitalization.Bavaria (ZD.B), BayStartUp GmbH as well as Bayernwerk AG, the Association of Bavarian Energy and Water Industries (VBEW) and Verbund AG.

The initiative aims to promote innovative startups from Germany, Austria and Switzerland that have a connection to Bavaria’s energy future and to network them directly with the energy industry. The competition was launched in 2016 and takes place every two years. In 2020, Bavaria was now once again looking for pioneers in the energy industry who can significantly shape the future with their ideas.

The competition was looking for new ideas, business models and technologies that would advance the future of energy in Bavaria and contribute to a secure, affordable and sustainable energy supply. The three focus topics 2020 of the competition represented digitalization, security of supply and hydrogen. These focus topics are of particular importance to Bavaria and are to be advanced with innovative ideas, business models and technologies.

From the application to the semifinals to the exciting finale

Over 60 applications were received by the jury during the two-month application phase. The jury, consisting of experts and specialists, sifted through all the projects submitted and selected the top 10 startups from all the applications for the semifinals. These top 10 then have the opportunity in the next step to publicly present their ideas in the semifinals of the competition.

Then, on September 24, 2020, the eagerly awaited semi-final took place as part of an online event with live broadcast. The top 10 start-ups that participated in the semifinals presented their submitted idea to the jury in a 5-minute presentation. The jury, consisting of experts and professionals, then selected three candidates as the finalists of the Energie Bayern Awards 2020. Three candidates who proved their innovative character through their ideas and thus prevailed over the competitors: Ennmac, gridX and VoltStorage.

The final of the competition was actually scheduled to take place as part of the Bavarian Energy Award on October 22, 2020. However, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the event was canceled and the partners of the competition decided to break new ground for this year’s Energy Start-up Bavaria Award. As a result, no less than three winners were chosen in this year’s competition: finalists gridX, Enmacc and VoltStorage were awarded the „Energy Start-up Bavaria 2020“ for their ideas, business models and technologies for a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future.

The official award ceremony of the Energy Start-up Bavaria Award took place on February 22, 2021 at the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. Bavarian Minister of State Hubert Aiwanger selected the three winners of the competition and offered his congratulations. „Innovative strength is crucial for future energy supply,“ Aiwanger emphasized.
