VOLTSTORAGE EXPANDS RESEARCH DEPARTMENT

Dr. Buddhinie Jayathilake and Dr. Sean Ashton join VoltStorage’s Redox Flow research team.

Munich, 01 July 2019 – VoltStorage has been developing ecological energy storage solutions based on Vanadium Redox Flow (VRF) technology since 2016. After last year’s market launch of the world’s first cost-effective home battery system based on this storage technology, VoltStorage strengthens its Department for Redox Flow Research with two experts from the field of battery development.

Dr. Buddhinie Jayathilake is the best in her grade in Analytical Chemistry at Colombo University (Sri Lanka) and taught and researched at Southern California University for five years, one of the top 20 universities in the USA. Her research was focused on Redox Flow technology. Buddhinie is one of the few researchers worldwide to have researched iron-based Redox Flow batteries. “All-iron redox flow batteries are one of the most future-proof storage technologies because they are particularly ecological and cost-effective. With the expertise of Buddhinie we want to realize a new generation of Redox Flow storage systems in this area”, says Michael Peither, VoltStorage CTO and head of the Department for Redox Flow Research.

Dr. Sean Ashton is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has many years of experience in the development of fuel cells. In the past, Sean has worked intensively on the system design of fuel cells for automotive applications. “Fuel cells are very similar to Redox Flow batteries. Therefore, Sean has valuable experience regarding technical procedures for quality assurance and diagnostic systems. With his know-how, we want to set new standards in the field of Redox Flow technology,” says VoltStorage CTO Michael Peither.

With Buddhinie and Sean, the VoltStorage Research Department now comprises six employees who are exclusively concerned with technological development, far away from the operative business. “It is crucial for the further development of the company that we continue to break new ground in research and strive for innovative solutions. Research and development will therefore continue to be one of the cornerstones of VoltStorage in the future,” says VoltStorage CEO Jakob Bitner.
